WANNA BE’S AND BLING BLING
Inspiration Nouveau Riche. Some snobbish people have become rich too quickly and like to show off; often without class or style, especially the Hip Hop scene shows a lot of Bling Bling. For a large mainstream customer group, who has less to spend, there are expensive ‘must have’ (look-alike) accessories and toys (like the Prada key ring pendant robot) to show off and pretend that they are ‘somebody’, a VIP; less affluent people visit the millionaires’ trade fairs, buy the millionaires’ glossy magazines to get in the ‘feel rich’ mood; anyone can be a star or an idol through TV nowadays; everybody can look like a star, feel like a film diva, a goddess with the ‘Oscar’ dresses. The street- and (active) sportswear scene in this theme is changing to much more feminine, glamorous, even theatrical styles with dresses, laces, fake jewelry, gold and silvershine, and also fake furs.
Colors and Fabrics Metallics and loud accents; fabrics with overdone fake luxury of kitschy taste, such as all over golden and silver leather looks, lamé, sequins, brocade prints, giant rhinestones; huge theatrical lace motives with Lurex and metallic threads, golden and silver lace; rich Versace and Hermes prints with dollar signs; real money coins. Stretch wovens and denims and active sports fabrics with rich embroidery, Lurex, laces and/or jewelry; pearls and strings, also as trompe de l’oeil prints.
Silhouettes Body-conscious in general; long ‘Oscar’ dresses with goddess drapes, bare shoulders and back details, but more and more with long sleeves, and more discrete looks for daywear and homewear….rich corsetry with lots of embroidery, jewelry and Svarovski crystals; showy, very tight active sportswear, with lots of Bling Bling buckles, clasps, studs, zippers, belts, chain strings, and hammering. Slim stretch pants. Sometimes playful styling combinations of ‘dressed-up chic and rich’ looks, combined with ‘normal’ comic-strip and fun print T-shirts! |
